Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen won his first Gold Glove award Tuesday night.
McCutchen became the 16th Pirate to win a Gold Glove and the first since Nate McLouth in 2008. Roberto Clemente won 12 Gold Gloves with the Pirates, and Andy Van Slyke won five.
"Honored to have won the Gold Glove! To be apart of this elite class of defenders means so much to me.Hard work is paying off!" McCutchen tweeted Tuesday night.
Major league managers and coaches voted for the awards.
McCutchen, 26, beat out the Atlanta Braves' Michael Bourn and the Cincinnati Reds' Drew Stubbs, the other two National League center fielders named as finalists.
McCutchen won despite a minus-6.9 Ultimate Zone Rating, a defensive metric that attempts to quantify how many runs a fielder saved or allowed due to his defense. Bourn had a 22.4 UZR, which led NL center fielders according to Fangraphs.com, and Stubbs ranked third with a 6.8 UZR.
McCutchen will also finish as one of top vote-getters in the National League most valuable player voting. The winner will be announced Nov. 15.
