The Pirates added two players to their roster Thursday, claiming right-handed reliever Chad Beck off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays and catcher Ali Solis from the San Diego Padres.

The Pirates designated infielder Jeff Clement and catcher Eric Fryer for assignment to make room.

The move provides the Pirates with an inexpensive option when determining bullpen construction this offseason and adds catching depth to their minor-league system.

Beck, 27, appeared in 14 games for the Blue Jays this season. He spent most of the year in Class AAA Las Vegas and had a 1.31 ERA, but only 24 strikeouts in 48 innings.

The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Beck in the 14th round of the 2006 draft. They sent him to the Blue Jays at the '08 trade deadline in exchange for David Eckstein. He debuted in '11 but only pitched three games.

Solis, 25, made his debut with the Padres in September. He hit .283 with six home runs for Class AA San Antonio before the Padres added him to their major-league roster.

In an '11 season split between Class AA and Class AAA, Solis hit .256 with a .298 on-base percentage and six home runs in 313 plate appearances.

Clement hit .276 with 16 home runs and 35 doubles for Class AAA Indianapolis this season, but did not play much when called up in late August. He joined the Pirates organization in a trade from the Seattle Mariners in '09.

Fryer likely will clear waivers, and it is possible the Pirates could keep both players in the organization. Both already have been outrighted to the minors in their career, meaning they have the option to elect free agency if they clear waivers and are sent to the minors.
