WASHINGTON -- The Penguins got a hat trick from Chris Kunitz and won their third game in a row, 6-3, over the Washington Capitals this afternoon at Verizon Center.
Paul Martin gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead at 3:37 of the first period on a shot from the right point. Sidney Crosby won a faceoff to set the play in motion.
Washington tied it, 1-1, less than two minutes later when Mike Green lifted a shot from just above the left hash mark over the shoulder of Penguins goaltender Tomas Vokoun at 5:05.
The Penguins regained the lead, 2-1, at 8:20 of the first period when Deryk Engelland blasted a shot from the left point and Matt Cooke deflected it in.
The Capitals tied it, 2-2, on a fluky goal. Vokoun went behind his net to play a long dump-in by Washington's John Carlson, but the puck took an odd bounce off of the glass and flew into the open net at 4:03 of the second period.
The Penguins came back with goals from Kris Letang (6:56) and Kunitz (7:33), both from the left circle, to give the Penguins a 4-2 edge.
Kunitz struck again with a power-play goal at 13:39 of the second period to make it 5-2. From the left circle, he one-timed a well-threaded pass from Evgeni Malkin, who was in the right circle.
Washington got to within 5-3 at 3:33 of the third period when Mike Ribeiro tapped home a rebound for a power-play goal. Alex Ovechkin hustled to keep the puck in the Penguins' zone and threw the puck toward the net.
Kunitz got his third goal with 7.2 seconds left in regulation during a Penguins' five-on-three power play. He slammed home a setup from Crosby.
The Penguins next play Tuesday night against the Islanders in New York.
