Penguins waive seven to assure minor-league eligibility for lockout

The Penguins have put seven players on waivers to make it possible for them to play in the American Hockey League if, as expected, the NHL is shut down by a labor dispute.
Forwards Philippe Dupuis, Benn Ferriero, Riley Holzapfel, Warren Peters and Trevor Smith, along with defensemen Dylan Reese and Alex Grant, were assigned to the Baby Penguins at midday today.
All are long-shots to open the season on the major-league roster, assuming there is a season.
The league and its Players' Association have yet to forge a collective bargaining agreement to replace the one set to expire at 11:59 p.m. Saturday.
In addition to the players who were waived, the Penguins are trying to negotiate contracts that would allow some other players, left winger Eric Tangradi among them, to join their farm team in Wilkes-Barre while the NHL is idle.
Noon was the deadline for waiving players in order to have them clear before the CBA expires.
