The Penguins have signed their two first-round draft choices in 2012, defensemen Derrick Pouliot and Olli Maatta, to three-year entry-level contracts.

The deals will take effect when the players turn pro.

The Penguins drafted Pouliot with the No. 8 selection in the opening round, a choice acquired from Carolina in the Jordan Staal trade.

He had 11 goals and 48 assists in 72 regular-season games with Portland of the Western Hockey League. Pouliot added 17 points during the playoffs.

Joe Morrow, the Penguins' No. 1 pick in 2011, was Pouliot's teammate with the Winterhawks.

Maatta, who is Finnish, was claimed with the 22nd pick in Round 1 of the draft.

He had five goals and 27 assists in 58 regular-season games with London of the Ontario Hockey League in 2011-12, then put up six goals and 17 assists in 19 playoff games.
