Penguins lose, reduce roster by 13

In the first game at Mellon Arena since the playoffs, the Penguins fall to Detroit, 5-2, in a preseason game last night. The Penguins' Mark Eaton got the Penguins on the board early.

Henrik Zetterberg scored twice in Detroit's 5-2 exhibition victory against the Penguins at Mellon Arena last night. Mark Eaton and Evgeni Malkin scored for the Penguins (1-1-2) while Kris Draper, Niklas Kronwall and Mikael Samuelsson got the other Red Wings goals.
The Penguins pared their roster to 27 by sending forwards Nathan Smith, Connor James, Tyler Kennedy, Chris Minard, Jeff Taffe and Tim Wallace, defensemen Alex Goligoski, Ryan Lannon, Joe Rullier and Ben Lovejoy and goalie Ty Conklin to their minor-league team in Wilkes-Barre and returning centers Angelo Esposito and Dustin Jeffrey to their junior clubs.
