NHL talks remain stalled as midnight deadline approaches

The NHL will enter into a new phase of the latest labor strife at midnight tonight. The league plans to lock out the players upon the expiration of a collective bargaining agreement that has been in place for the past seven seasons.
It will be the NHL's fourth work stoppage since 1992.
The NHL and its Players Association exchanged proposals Wednesday, but both were rejected by the opposing side. No formal negotiating sessions had been scheduled as of this afternoon, although the sides have had some contact by phone over the past 24 hours.
Training camps are scheduled to begin Friday, and the regular season opens Oct. 11. The Penguins' home opener is slated for Oct. 13 against Buffalo. All of that will be on hold until there is agreement on a new CBA.
Clubs will have no contact with players during a lockout. Players are expected to work out on their own, with some opting to play overseas or in the minor leagues.
The NHL will follow work stoppages last year that affected the NFL, which started on time after an offseason lockout, and the NBA, which had its schedule reduced to 66 games after a settlement around Thanksgiving.
