NHL cancels first games of the season

The NHL, which locked out its players nearly four weeks ago, today canceled a total of 82 games at the start of the regular season, through Oct. 24.
Games were scheduled to begin next Thursday. The Penguins' opener was slated for Oct. 12 at Consol Energy Center against the New York Islanders. The Penguins are losing six games, three of them at home, under this cancellation.
The lockout began Sept. 15 after the collective bargaining agreement between the league and the NHL Players' Association expired. It had been in place since 2005 and had been forged after a lockout wiped out the 2004-05 season.
The league earlier canceled all preseason games, something that NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said cost the league about $100 million.
The most recent talks between the sides broke off after two hours Tuesday. No further negotiations have been scheduled.
