Penguins center Evgeni Malkin played in his first game of the season in the Kontinental Hockey League today, getting an assist on the tying goal as Metallurg Magnitogorsk lost to Salavat Yulaev, 4-3, in overtime.

Malkin, the defending NHL scoring champion and MVP, signed with the club in his Russian hometown because of an ongoing lockout by NHL owners.

He also took a hip check from Andrei Zubarev while carrying the puck one-on-three down the slot. He was upended but not hurt.
