Hockey talks go until wee hours today

The National Hockey League and its players association jump-started negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement Saturday, and kept the talks going until early this morning.
Precisely what was accomplished in those talks, which were conducted at an undisclosed location by the No. 2 men from each side, isn't clear, but the league and union apparently plan to get together again in the near future.
"We had a series of meetings over the course of the day, and covered a lot of the key issues separating us," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said by email today. "We plan to meet again in the coming days."
National Hockey League Players Association special counsel Steve Fehr, who represented the union Saturday, subsequently issued a statement that offered a similar assessment.
"I agree with what Bill said," Fehr said. "Hopefully, we can continue the dialogue, expand the group and make steady progress."
There still is no word on when the next session will take place, who will be involved or where it will be held.
The NHL has been shut down by the lockout since mid-September and canceled its schedule for October and November, as well as the Winter Classic game between Detroit and Toronto, which was scheduled for Jan. 1 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.
