Goalie John Gibson of Whitehall played a nearly flawless game to help Team USA earn a 5-1 victory today over Canada in the semifinals of the world junior championships in Ufa, Russia.

The U.S. will face the winner of the Sweden-Russia semifinal Saturday in the championship game.

John Gaudreau and Jake McCabe scored twice for the U.S., which also got a goal from Jim Vesey.

Gibson stopped everything except one shot during a strange sequence early in the third period, when Canada's Ty Rattie swatted the puck into the net after a whistle had blown.

That whistle prompted several of Gibson's teammates to stop but after a review, the officials decided the goal should stand.

It served only to whittle the U.S. lead to 4-1 and spoil Gibson's shutout bid, however.
