Harrisburg native is in fifth after day one of Olympic heptathlon

Hyleas Fountain, a 31-year-old native of Harrisburg, is in fifth place in the Olympic heptathlon after completing four events Friday -- the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash.
Fountain, the silver medalist in the heptathlon in Beijing, has a score of 3,900, barely training third-place Jessica Zelinka of Canada (3,903) and fourth-place Lyudmyla Yosypenko of Ukraine (3,902).
Jessica Ennis of Great Britain leads the event with 4,158, followed by Austra Skujyte of Lithuania with 3,974.
Fountain will compete in the final three competitions -- the long jump, the javelin throw and the 800 meters -- today.
"I'm just going to go home and go to the dorm and get a really good night rest and hope for the best," Fountain said.
"Everybody wants gold, and I'm definitely giving 100 percent. I would settle just to be on the medal stand."
Ryan Whiting, a 25-year-old native of Harrisburg, finished ninth in the shot put finals Friday night at Olympic Stadium with a top throw of 20.64 meters -- well below the 21.66 he threw at the U.S. Olympic trials in June.
