Meadows harness racing driver Dave Palone became the North American all-time wins leader today, breaking Herve Filion's record of 15,180 victories today at The Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Washington County.

Palone needed just two wins coming into today to break the record, which has stood since 1971.

"It's mind boggling," Harness Racing Hall of Fame driver John Campbell said. "I never thought we'd see anybody get close to Herve, and Dave will pass him easily. To me, that speaks volumes about what a great accomplishment this is."

Palone tied the record on horse Well Al B, trained by Ron Burke. He broke the record on Herculotte Hanover, trained by Jim Arledge Jr.

Filion was on hand to meet Palone in the winner's circle to greet and congratulate Palone on breaking the record. Palone, 50, was inducted into the Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 2010.

"It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy," Filion said.

Palone has had the most wins at The Meadows for 23 straight years and averages more than three victories per program. Palone's first win came in 1983.
