Bruno Sammartino gets Hall call

The WWE announced Monday that Pittsburgh native Bruno Sammartino will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame at a ceremony April 6 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Sammartino, nicknamed "The Living Legend," is a two-time WWE champion and the longest reigning WWE champion in history, holding the title for a combined 11 years. His first title reign began May 17, 1963, where he defeated "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers at MSG.
After losing the title in 1971, he regained it on Dec. 10, 1973, defeating Stan Stasiak in New York and holding the championship until April 30, 1977.
"Having sold out more than 200 shows at Madison Square Garden and being the longest reigning WWE champion in history, Bruno Sammartino is truly 'The Living Legend,'" said Vince McMahon, WWE chairman and CEO. "This is an extraordinary and historic moment to have Bruno take his rightful place in the WWE Hall of Fame."

Organized crime gangs fixed or tried to fix hundreds of matches around the world in recent years, including World Cup and European Championship qualifiers and two Champions League games, Europol announced. The European Union's police agency said an 18-month review found 380 suspicious matches in Europe and another 300 questionable games outside the continent, mainly in Africa, Asia and South and Central America. It also found evidence that a Singapore-based crime syndicate was involved in some of the match-fixing.

The Detroit Tigers agreed to a one-year, $6,725,000 contract with right-hander Max Scherzer and avoided salary arbitration.
• The Oakland Athletics acquired infielder Jed Lowrie and right-hander Fernando Rodriguez from the Houston Astros for first baseman Chris Carter and two minor leaguers.
• Barry Bonds' appeal of his felony obstruction of justice conviction will be heard by three federal judges who were each appointed by a different Democratic president. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unveiled its February schedule, which showed publicly for the first time the three judges assigned to Bonds' case. Senior Circuit Judges Mary M. Schroeder and Michael Daly Hawkins along with Judge Mary H. Murguia will hear oral arguments Feb. 13.
• The San Francisco Giants claimed infielder Tony Abreu off waivers from the Kansas City Royals.
• Former Colorado Rockies first-base coach Glenallen Hill will manage the organization's top minor league team in Colorado Springs this season.
• Prosecutors in Las Vegas are letting San Francisco Giants pitcher Sergio Romo off the hook in a misdemeanor case stemming from a New Year's Day tiff with Transportation Security Administration agents at McCarran International Airport. He was issued a summons Jan. 1 alleging he failed to provide proper identification at a TSA checkpoint at the Las Vegas airport.
Tennis
Spaniard Rafael Nadal's ailing left knee may still bother him for a few more weeks. Nadal practiced for 90 minutes with Nicolas Massu of Chile, his fourth consecutive day of training since arriving in the country for his first match in more than seven months. Nadal opens up today in the VTR Open, playing doubles with Argentina's Juan Monaco. On Wednesday, he will play singles in the second round.

CBS Radio Pittsburgh announced that Chris Mueller was elevated to the afternoon show (2-6 p.m.) on KDKA-FM, Sportsradio 93.7 The Fan. Colin Dunlap, a former Post-Gazette writer who was recently the host on weekends from 8-11 a.m., will replace Mueller in the late weekday slot from 10 p.m.-2 a.m.

Cal State Fullerton assistant women's basketball coach Monica Quan, 28, and her fiance University of Southern California public safety officer Keith Lawrence, 27, were found shot to death in a car Sunday at their upscale condominium complex in Irvine, Calif. Officers found their bodies after someone reported seeing Lawrence slumped over the wheel.
