A proposed soccer match this summer at Heinz Field featuring popular European professional club A.C. Milan has been called off.

Local organizers, including the Steelers, remain interested in such a match but want more time to promote the event and are eying 2013 instead, two people with knowledge of the negotiations said Monday.

It's believed financial considerations weighed into the decision because there was a short window to sell the needed amount of tickets to ensure the event wouldn't lose money,

A.C. Milan first announced an Aug. 4 "friendly" in Pittsburgh on its website last month. The date was subsequently, and tentatively, changed to Aug. 3 because of a schedule conflict at the stadium. Newcastle United was billed as the proposed opponent.

The Steelers, however, never signed off on the match for this year, and A.C. Milan is looking for a replacement match.
