Outdoors Notebook: New Game Commission member

Brian H. Hoover of Glenolden, Delaware County, was confirmed to an eight-year unpaid term on the Board of Game Commissioners. Hoover is Glenolden Borough manager and former owner of the South East Archery and Sports shop near Philadelphia. He holds degrees from Penn State and Delaware County Community College, is a member of Delaware County Field and Stream Association, the National Wild Turkey Federation and National Rifle Association, and has volunteered as a hunter-trapper education instructor for 27 years.

Fish for free

The state's final "fish for free" day is Sept. 3. Residents and nonresidents can legally fish for free throughout Pennsylvania. A state-run Family Fishing program will be held 9 a.m.-noon Sept. 1 at Goddard State Park, Mercer County. Bait and tackle provided, no licence required.

Bowhunting results

About 1,500 archers from 20 countries participated in the International Bowhunting Organization World Championships Aug. 12 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. Wesley S. Van Horn of Middleberg, Pa., won in the Advance Hunter Class, and Jesse Berkett of Punxsutawney took the Cub Class (ages 9-12). Other Pennsylvania winners: Theresa McAndrew of Old Forge, Female Hunter Class; Jared W. Neal of Sharon, Recurve Unaided Class; Gregory Mummert of Dover, Senior Hunter Class; Lucas Schirf of Northern Cambria, Semi-pro Class; John Demmer III of Kingsley, Traditional Class and Harley Lynn of Franklin, Youth Hunter Class (ages 13-17).
