A fish consumption advisory warned of increased PCB contamination of carp and channel catfish caught in the Beaver River. The announcement urges people to not eat those species taken from the confluence of the Mahoning and Shenango rivers to the New Brighton Dam.

The warning was part of an advisory issued by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and the state departments of Environmental Protection, Health and Agriculture. The warnings apply only to fish caught through recreational angling, not those raised commercially or bought in stores or restaurants.

"Pennsylvania's fish consumption message is consistent with the story being told throughout the country," said Fish and Boat executive director John Arway. "Eat fish, but choose wisely."

Additional announcements include:

French Creek (Venango County): A mercury-related advisory issued from Mill Creek at Utica to the mouth -- not more than two meals of walleye per month.

Thorn Creek (Butler County): An advisory has been lifted on trout taken from the headwaters to Frazier Mill.

Allegheny River (Armstrong County): A PCB-related advisory issued from Lock and Dam 3 to Lock and Dam 6 -- not more than one meal of carp per month.

Monongahela River (Fayette/Greene counties): A PCB-related one-meal-per-month advisory from Point Marion Lock and Dam to the Maxwell Lock and Dam.

A blanket advisory for all of Pennsylvania recommends limiting consumption of any recreationally caught fish to one meal per week. Find more information at www.fish.state.pa.us.

Cabin Fever

How will Marcellus Shale drilling impact trout streams? Where's a good place to fish south of Centre County, or to take a dream fishing vacation? Does Czech nymphing really get the pattern down fast, and how can I fish a dropper off a dry without sinking it?

The answer to those and other fly fishing questions can be found at the annual Cabin Fever fly fishing expo, a fundraiser for Penn's Woods West Trout Unlimited. Seminar speakers include Trout Unlimited eastern water project director Katy Dunlap, Pennsylvania trout guide Mike Heck, Montana trout guide Dennis Hanson, tier and angler Greg Kassimer and U.S. National Fly Fishing Championship gold medal winner George Daniel. The expo includes exhibitors, a fly-gear flea market and tying demonstrations from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 4 at Four Points Sheraton in Marshall. $7, under 12 free. Details www.pwwtu.org.
