Lake Erie (Erie County): Walleyes went for weighted Reef Runners in 30 feet from the Trenches to the international boarder. Steve Power of Monroeville released a dozen nice-size smallmouths in waters off Presque Isle. One angler reported nice walleyes and a citation-size steelhead trolling in 70 feet north of Elk Creek.
Conneaut Lake (Crawford County): Two nearly legal northerns were released Saturday in Pennsylvania's largest natural lake. Both went for crankbaits.
Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Fishing was generally slow, but several anglers caught a lot of panfish near the marina and Sheakleyville bridge. The Fish and Boat Commission and Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will hold a Family Fishing Program 9 a.m.-noon at Goddard State Park. No license required, equipment and handout materials will be supplied. Registration required at 814-683-5126.
Lake Arthur (Butler County): Warm water and bad weather put a damper on fishing during last week's Regatta at Lake Arthur. During a Post-Gazette Family Fishing program Aug. 4 several kids including William Wang, 10, of Wexford, and Angelica Glasgow, 6, of Seven Fields, caught their first fish. The regatta was cancelled Aug. 5 due to rain.
Lake Oneida, Thorn Run Reservoir (Butler County): Low levels at the water authority impoundments put a crimp on fishing, and maintenance work continues at Oneida. Catfish and crappies were active at dusk and dawn, but night fishing is prohibited at both lakes.
Allegheny River (Allegheny County): Goosh Gregor of Cokeburg caught nearly identical 35-inch, 15-pound flatheads on large creek chubs fishing on successive outings near Verona and Lock 3.
Monongahela River (Allegheny County): Joey Kielur, 17, of Hayes, took 20 minutes to reel in a 43-inch flathead on 8-pound test line the night of Aug. 6, while fishing near The Point in Pittsburgh. He had an easier time the same night hauling in a 31-inch flathead on 30-pound braided line. Both fish went for dead minnows.
Ohio River (Allegheny County): Ben Miscavage, 16, of Pleasant Hills won a Shad Lures catfish contest with a 54-inch, 30-pound flathead caught at night on a bluegill. After certified measurement the fish was released into the Monongahela River. Brandon Simonic, 19, of Ross caught a 46-inch flathead with 25-inch girth on a sheepshead, fishing at night near the Emsworth Dam.
Allegheny River (Westmoreland County): Channel cats remained active with reports of catches up to 30 inches. Many were caught at night using live minnows or stink baits.
Cross Creek Lake (Washington County): Fishing was generally slow, but bluegills suspended in 10-16 feet in the mouths of coves took maggot-tipped Ant jigs. Crappies were hanging at 14-20 feet near structure, and a few walleyes were caught trolling pink and orange crawler harnesses at 15-22 feet. Largemouths went for black 4-inch plastic worms -- one angler caught 10 bass but no keepers. Several nice carp were caught on crawlers in 20 feet.
