On Western Pennsylvania waters newly designated Approved Trout Open to Year Round Fishing, anglers must have a valid trout/salmon stamp regardless of targeted species. Fishing is permitted March 1 to 8 a.m. April 13 with catch-and-release only for trout. Open season for walleye, saugers and saugeye closed March 14. It reopens May 4. Lake Erie and tributaries: In Ohio, Manistee-strain steelhead, genetically different than those planted in Pennsylvania, were running with good catches reported on the Rocky, Chagrin, Conneaut and Grand rivers. In the Keystone State, snow melt boosted the flow on upper and middle Elk Creek with hard-won catches reported by those who worked for them. French Creek (Crawford County): The state Fish and Boat Commission reported nice catches of muskies and northerns. Lake Arthur (Butler County): Kenneth L. Andres, 73, of Summit fell through 4-inch ice on Big Run Bay and died March 9. A Moraine State Park official said the accident might have occurred when ice softened because of rising temperatures and multiple holes cut too close together. Buffalo Creek (Armstrong County): After a March 2 stocking of browns and rainbows on the Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only area and lower waters north of Freeport, anglers did well fishing nymphs, Wooly Buggers, Glo-bugs and small bucktail jigs. Allegheny River (Armstrong County): A muskie was caught near the mouth of Mahoning Creek. Pine Creek (Allegheny County): Despite wind and snow, Jim Maher of Friendship released several trout the day after a March 1 state stocking of browns and rainbows in the Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only section. Deer Creek (Allegheny County): The state stocked browns and rainbows in the Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only section March 1. Indian Creek, Lake (Westmoreland County): Browns and brookies were stocked March 11 by the state in the creek???s Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only section. Rainbows were put in the lake. Loyalhanna Creek (Westmoreland County): Two state tanker trucks delivered brown and rainbow trout from Zimmerman Run to Monastery Run March 9, with some trophy-sized browns as well as smaller trout stocked in the Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only section. Sewickley Creek (Westmoreland County): The state stocked browns and rainbows March 11. Twin Lakes (Westmoreland County): The upper and lower lakes will get a state stocking of rainbows today. Volunteers were invited to meet at 11:30 p.m. at the lower lake. Report your catch at firstname.lastname@example.org.
