Despite the presence of skim ice and some solid surfaces, weather has not been conducive to ice fishing. Many lakes are unfishable, covered with ice that's too thin for angling. The rule of thumb: 4 inches to support the weight of one person, and avoid ice over springs, moving water and near tributaries. Best bet: stay off the ice.

Lake Erie: Skim ice interfered with steelhead fishing east of the peninsula, but lower Sixteen Mile Creek was open. Elk Creek at Girard was descending and at a good level for fishing, but anglers reported light snow and no activity near Folly's End. Walnut Creek near the mouth was rising but fishable at 86 cfs. The National Weather Service issued a snow warning Wednesday for the Erie area, but air temperatures in the high 20s were expected to rise to 40 by Sunday.

Lake Rowena (Cambria County): Trout were caught in the lake's open water.

Allegheny River (Armstrong, Allegheny counties): Legal muskies were caught and released near Ford City. Anglers report a walleye bite from Oleopolis to Brandon.

Donegal Lake (Westmoreland County): Slow fishing in this Early Season Trout-Stocked Waters, but some trout were caught in ice-free areas. The lake's first state stocking of rainbow trout is planned for Feb. 13.

Twin Lakes (Westmoreland County): The bite was slow on the lower lake, but anglers continued to report a light trout catch on these Early Season Trout-Stocked Waters. A state stocking of rainbows is scheduled Feb. 14.

Northmoreland Lake (Westmoreland County): The Early Season Trout-Stocked Waters are scheduled for a state stocking of rainbow trout Feb. 1.

Mammoth Lake (Westmoreland County): Part of the Early Season Trout-Stocked Waters Program, PFBC plans to stock rainbows on Feb. 13.

Canonsburg Lake (Washington County): Anglers caught trout in easy-access areas not covered by ice. A rainbow stocking is planned Feb. 14 on this Early Season Trout-Stocked Waters.

Youghiogheny River (Somerset County): The few anglers on the water reported few trout caught in the tailrace.

Spring Creek (Centre County): Frigid nights cooled the waters on recent mornings and cold rain Monday evening kept the water temperature down, but the flow was 139 cfs and dropping (70 cfs is average in January) and the trout were hitting egg patterns. A several trout were released Monday near Benner Springs Hatchery.

Little Juniata (Centre County): High but dropping to favorable levels. Good flow expected for the weekend.

Sayers Lake (Centre County): On open water, yellow perch and black crappies were caught on live minnows and twister tails.

Conewago Creek (Adams County): Fly anglers were landing trout in the Catch-And-Release Fly-Fishing Only stretch.

Codorus Creek (York County): The Trophy Trout Section yielded a few trout to fly anglers.
