The state Fish and Boat Commission's new cold-weather life-jacket regulations mandate that all boaters must wear a Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device Nov. 1 through April 30 while underway or at anchor on boats less than 16 feet in length or any canoe or kayak.
Lake Erie and tributaries (Erie County): Increased flow early in the week led to some nice steelhead catches on upper Elk and Crooked creeks. A light shower Wednesday raised the water but left no stain on the mile streams, and yesterday Elk was clear and fish were scattered at Folly's End. Crowds gathered near the mouths of the bigger creeks, and while flow was average on Elk and Walnut a spike in water temperature discouraged fresh fish from entering Walnut. Prolonged showers were predicted for today through Nov. 3 throughout the Erie region.
Caldwell Creek (Crawford County): In a new state program, fingerling trout were stocked Oct. 10 in the Catch and Release Fly-Fishing Only area.
Canadohta Lake (Crawford County): A draw-down is planned to clear aquatic vegetation.
Clarion River (Clarion County): Anglers reported a few muskies and nice walleyes in bigger waters, while up above walleyes and trout were active.
Piney Dam (Clarion County): Shoreline trolling turned up walleyes and perch.
Kahle Lake (Clarion County): Despite the drawdown, some nice crappies were caught.
Youghiogheny river and lake (Somerset County): Due to the reduced pool level, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed the spillway boat launch for the season. Anglers caught crappies on small minnows, and a few walleyes. At the outflow and below trout action was slow but rock bass were very active with some nice catches reported.
