Big Macs shock Peters Township

Canon-McMillan had not scored a goal in five halves against Peters Township this season.
It's what the Big Macs did in the sixth that put them into their first WPIAL championship.
No. 13-seed Canon-McMillan used two second-half goals to stun No. 1 Peters Township, 2-1, Wednesday in a Class AAA boys soccer semifinal at Baldwin.
Jake Wilcox scored five minutes into the second half and teammate Ivan Viveros put the Big Macs (17-4) ahead, 2-0, eight minutes later.
Peters Township (14-2-2) got its lone goal when Sean Baxendell scored with seven minutes remaining.
The Indians, a finalist a year ago, had won seven matches in a row.
Canon-McMillan lost twice to its Section 5 rival by 1-0 scores in the regular season. The Big Macs' other two losses were to Upper St. Clair, whom they will face in the final.
"Peters Township plays direct," Canon-McMillan coach Larry Fingers said. "We mixed things up in this game. We played 18 guys [Wednesday night]. We were more efficient against them in this game."
• Upper St. Clair 2, Pine-Richland 1: Defending champion Upper St. Clair (18-1-1) got a goal from Ethan Dysert with seven minutes left to edge the Rams (18-2) at Chartiers Valley. Robbie Mertz scored a first-half goal for the Panthers, who are the No. 2 seed.
• Mars 2, Belle Vernon 1: Matt White scored the winning goal with seven minutes left in regulation as the Planets (18-2-1) grabbed a win against the No. 11-seeded Leopards (14-4) at Gateway. Spencer Posey also scored for the Planets, who reached the championship for the fourth time in the past five seasons.
• Greensburg Central Catholic 2, Sewickley Academy 1: Devon Nguyen and Adam Tucker scored 16 minutes apart in the first half to give the No. 4 Centurions (15-4-1) an upset win against No. 1 Sewickley Academy (17-1-1) at Hampton. The Panthers previously had allowed three goals this season and none since Sept. 25.
• Riverside 2, Serra Catholic 1: Trevor Moser's goal with less than three minutes left in the first overtime vaulted No. 10 seed Riverside (15-4-1) into the final for the first time since 1999 after slipping past No. 3 Serra (15-3-1) at Hopewell. Riverside upset No. 2 Springdale in the quarterfinals.
