North Xtra: Gruber adds laurels to swimming resume

At the PIAA Class AA swimming championships which took place last week at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium, Mars Area's Maggie Gruber recorded quite a list of accolades.
She won the 100-yard butterfly event for the fourth year in a row and also took gold in the 100-yard backstroke for the second consecutive year with a time of 54.15 seconds.
Excluding relays, Gruber is only the 14th female swimmer in PIAA history to win six gold medals. This year, Gruber was also the girls' Swimmer of the Meet at the state championships.
Looking back to her freshman year, Gruber hadn't expected to notch such a resume. Her hard work was about doing something she loved.
"I just said, 'You know, I'm just going to go for the best time I can and see what happens,'" Gruber recalled. "My motto is, 'If you're not having fun with it, why are you doing it?'"
Similarly, Pine-Richland diver Dominic Giordano won the PIAA Class AAA diving championship with a score of 584.45 -- a PIAA record. Giordano edged Ian Forlini (572.20), who competes for William Tennent High School of Warminster, a Philadelphia suburb.
Giordano had actually hoped to win the state title last year as a junior, but instead placed fifth.
The state diving title made Giordano's senior year special.
"It was a really nice way to end my senior year of high school diving," he said.
