High School Wrestling: Kiski Area beats Central Catholic

Kiski Area rallied from a nine-point deficit with pins in the final two bouts Wednesday night to upset visiting Central Catholic, 36-33. The victory clinched the Class AAA Section 1A title for the No. 4-ranked Cavaliers (10-0, 5-0). The No. 2 Vikings (3-2, 3-2) finish third in the sub-section.

"It's unbelievable. It's awesome," Kiski Area coach Chuck Tursky said. "It was supposed to be a rebuilding year for us. It was a total team effort."

Kiski Area trailed, 33-24, going into the final two bouts. Freshman Jacob Ardellitz pinned Central's Ronnie Seibert after trailing, 5-0, in the 119-pound bout. Sophomore Cole Landowski clinched the victory with a pin 57 seconds into the 125-pound bout against Raymond Buckley.

Other Class AAA matches

• In a battle of Section 3A unbeatens, Butler (10-0, 5-0) recorded a convincing 41-24 win against host Hampton (10-1, 3-1). Cole Baxter recorded the biggest victory of the match for the Golden Tornado with his pin of Jake Hart at 189.

• No. 7 Waynesburg (13-6, 5-0) claimed the top spot in Section 4B with a convincing 48-17 win against visiting Peters Township (15-3, 4-1). Derrick Nelson (119), Jeremy Ellis (189) and Mike Weidner (285) registered pins for Waynesburg, while Zach McGinnis (125) recorded a technical fall.

• No. 8 North Allegheny (8-2, 4-0) captured first place in Section 3B with a convincing 54-16 win against host North Hills (11-7, 3-2). Phil Bachman (112), Ryan Sippel (140), Kevin Monper (145), Colton Byerly (152), Alex DeCiantis (160), Jarred Lux (171) and Seth Marks (215) had pins for North Allegheny.

Class AA matches

• South Side Beaver (8-5, 5-0) clinched the Section 1B title with a 49-30 victory against Central Valley (5-5, 3-2). Chris Flynn (103), Jaron Martin (119), Shane Gentry (125), Connor Payne (135) and Justin Martz (171) recorded pins for South Side Beaver. Michael Watt (152), Garrett Ott (189), Alexander Daugherty (215) and Jake Turley (285) had pins for Central Valley.

• Southmoreland (4-1, 4-1) claimed second place in Section 2B with a 39-27 triumph against Yough (4-2, 2-2). Derek Walter (112), Joey Beltz (119), Robert Smith (125), Avery Overly (130) and Jordan Kitta (285) had pins for Southmoreland.

• Freedom (4-2, 4-1) clinched second place in Section 1B with a 46-15 victory against Laurel (2-9, 2-3). Bo Bonzo (135), Ryan Kane (145), Heath Nye (152), and Scott Merkel (189) had pins for Freedom.
