High School Wrestling: Butler stages a late rally to grab Section 3A crown

Win at 132 pounds caps upset against No. 5 Hampton

The Butler High School wrestling team rallied from a 13-point deficit with wins in four of the last five bouts to upset No. 5 Hampton, 32-31, in a Class AAA Section 3A showdown in a packed gym at Butler.

"It was a great night for wrestling, regardless of who won or lost," Butler coach Scott Stoner said. "It was awesome to see a packed gym and the fan support both teams received. The match couldn't have been any closer."

The match began with the 138-pound weight class, and Butler (5-0 in the section) won four of the first six bouts for a 15-10 lead. Butler forfeited two of the next three, and Hampton picked up a pin from Nick Yaroszewski at 220 for a 28-15 lead with five bouts remaining.

Conor Foust and Blake Caudill recorded major decisions at 106 and 113, and teammate Korey Caudill registered a pin at 120 to move Butler in front, 29-28, with just two matches left.

Peter Craig's 7-4 decision against Nick Sutton at 126 gave Hampton (4-1) the lead, 31-29, but Zach Reges pulled out a 6-5 victory against Kevin Synan at 132 pounds in the final match, giving Butler the victory.

More Class AAA

• No. 3 Kiski Area (5-0) claimed the top spot in Section 1A with a 39-32 victory against No. 6 Central Catholic (4-1). The Cavaliers rallied from a 32-30 deficit with wins in the final two bouts, including a pin by Jim Bistline (145) that clinched the victory. Zach Musco (170), Matt McCutcheon (182) and Shane Kuhn (220) also recorded pins for Kiski Area. Vincenzo Joseph (106), Tyler Manion (152) and Perry Hills (195) had falls for Central Catholic.

• Peters Township finished its Section 4B schedule with a 5-0 record after a 35-28 win against Waynesburg. Phillip Mary (113) and Andrew Irwin (195) had pins for the Indians. Tommy Henderson (138) and Marcus Pizzi (182) had falls for Waynesburg (4-1).

• Ringgold (5-0) captured the top spot in Section 2B with a 42-30 win against Elizabeth Forward (4-1). Alex Powell (145), Devin Fallenstein (152) and Jake Wisener (160) had pins for Ringgold. Ben Diana (170), Anthony Janicki (195) and Ben Guenther (285) had pins for Elizabeth Forward.

Class AA

• No. 5 Burrell (5-0) concluded its Section 3B schedule by posting a 44-27 win against Valley (4-1). Steve Edwards (132), Phil Marra (138) and Derrick Beattie (170) had pins for Burrell. Ceasar Thomas (106), Patrick DeWitt (120) and Kyre Strickland (285) had falls for Valley.
