South Fayette's Stephen Zombek and Mohawk's McKenzie Stelter took advantage of golden opportunities and captured WPIAL Class AA diving championships Friday night at South Park High School.

Zombek, a junior, won silver last year, finishing 0.15 points behind South Park's Billy Rountree. Rountree chose not to dive this season, leaving the Class AA boys title up for grabs.

Zombek took advantage, scoring a 353.25 over 11 dives to give South Fayette its first diving championship.

It was another close one for Zombek, as he edged Beaver junior Micah Ringer (342.65). Blackhawk senior Dewey Fry, a fourth-place finisher last season, scored 305.40 to finish third.

The girls Class AA title also was up for grabs with defending champion Maria Lohman of Chartiers Valley now competing in Class AAA.

Stelter, a third-place finisher last season, seized the opportunity, scoring a 419.85 to edge Moon senior Heather Lonkert (417.65).

Stelter overcame a nine-point deficit with three dives remaining to capture the gold medal.

South Fayette senior Grace Klimek scored a 394.65 to win bronze and set the school record for an 11-dive score.

The top nine boys and girls finishers advance to the PIAA Class AA championships March 13-14 at Bucknell University.
