Another challenge, another convincing victory for Central Catholic.
Damion Jones-Moore rushed for 201 yards and scored three touchdowns Friday night, leading the Vikings to a 36-6 rout of Penn Hills in a Big East Conference game at Carnegie Mellon's Gesling Stadium.
One week after routing Woodland Hills, a quality team, the Vikings (5-0, 3-0) pounded one of their perennial rivals, one that appeared to be on the rise. The Indians (1-4, 1-1) started 0-3 against a difficult non-conference schedule, but played well in a victory a week ago against Plum.
Central Catholic, No. 1 in the Post-Gazette's PIAA Class AAAA rankings, left no doubt, racing to leads of 23-0 at halftime and 36-0 after three quarters. Jones-Moore scored twice in the opening period, on a 72-yard run and an 11-yard pass from Perry Hills, then had a 24-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Hills, who was 9 of 11 for 100 yards, also had a 29-yard touchdown run.
Corey Jones broke the shutout in the fourth quarter with a 73-yard touchdown run for Penn Hills.
The host Gators sprinted to a 42-0 first-quarter lead and breezed past the Knights in the Foothills Conference. Fifth-ranked Gateway (4-1, 2-1) got touchdowns in the opening period from five players: Darin Franklin, Patrick Livsey, Tyler Scott, Andre Martin and Thomas Woodson, Franklin finished with 138 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns. Gateway gained 419 yards on the ground and limited Norwin (0-5, 0-2) to 66 yards of offense. The Gators have allowed the fewest points (43) in WPIAL Class AAAA.
Luke Hagy rambled for three first-half touchdowns, sparking the Blue Devils' rout of the visiting Big Macs in a Great Southern Conference opener. Hagy gained 120 yards on 25 carries, scoring from 7, 10 and 2 yards for Mt. Lebanon (3-2, 1-0). Pat Goff threw 6 yards to Dylan White and Tyler Roth rambled 35 yards for the Blue Devils' other scores, dropping Canon-McMillan to 0-5, 0-1.
