WPIAL Class AAAA: Mt. Lebanon wins at North Hills

North Hills was about to turn an unconventional opener into a victory, but Mt. Lebanon's defense had other plans and helped the visiting Blue Devils to a thrilling, 17-16 win last night.
Mt. Lebanon led, 17-10, late in the contest, before North Hills got a 1-yard touchdown run with five seconds left to bring the Indians within one. The Indians chose to go for a two-point conversion attempt, but the run was thwarted.
Taylor Schmidt ran for 142 yards and added a 64-yard scoring run for North Hills, but the Indians could not overcome a pair of second-quarter Mt. Lebanon touchdowns.
Trailing, 3-0, Mt. Lebanon's Jordan Banky recovered a North Hills fumble in the end zone, and Luke Christian followed with a 49-yard touchdown run to give the Blue Devils a 14-3 halftime lead.
Luke Alberts led Mt. Lebanon, rushing for 132 yards on 17 carries.
The game was delayed about 10 minutes after three North Hills students were injured when a railing gave way at Martorelli Stadium. For more details, see Page B-2.
Alex Papson ran for 100 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns to push the fifth-ranked Tigers to a comfortable win against the visiting Mountain Lions. Papson scored on runs of 12 and 1 yard in the first quarter, and the Tigers extended their lead to 32-0 at halftime. Zach Runzo scored on a 50-yard interception return and Grant Huckestein on a 57-yard punt return. Last year, Altoona beat the Tigers, 28-21.
Shaler raced to a 22-0 third-quarter lead and held on to defeat the host Highlanders. Jesse Della Valle highlighted the romp with a 1-yard run and a 26-yard touchdown reception from Tyler Bills. Matt Ramey added 101 yards on 19 carries and a 13-yard scoring run for the Titans. Baldwin's Jordan Joyce finished with 136 rushing yards, including a 74-yard touchdown.
In a game that lacked much offensive yardage, Class AAAA Latrobe did just enough to defeat visiting Class AAA Derry. The Wildcats got an 11-yard touchdown run by Brad Burkley and a 7-yard scoring run from Eric Shaffer in the second quarter. Steven Taylor added a 7-yard scoring-run in the fourth quarter. Burkley ran for 59 yards on 15 carries. Latrobe outgained Derry, 160-152.
A pair of long touchdowns elevated the visting Knights to the win against Seneca Valley. Joel Defelice scored on a 67-yard touchdown run to provide the game's first points. Then, with Norwin ahead, 10-7, late in the game, Andrew Cockerm scored on a 65-yard return of a blocked punt to push the Knights to victory. Defelice tallied 108 yards on nine carries. Seneca Valley's Jack Graham ran for 127 yards and added 89 yards on four receptions.
Alex Park connected with Tim Kikta on three touchdown passes, and the host Panthers held Penn-Trafford off the scoreboard in the second half to gain the victory. Park totaled four touchdowns, including strikes of 44, 32 and 21 yards to Kikta, who finished with five catches for 139 yards. Penn-Trafford hit for a pair of long touchdowns, a 99-yard kickoff return by Ryan Austin and a 78-yard reception by Matt Hyland. Ahead, 27-21, at the half, the Panthers outscored Penn-Trafford, 21-0, in the second half.
Andrew Erenberg ran for 136 yards on 24 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Class AAAA Indians in the win against the visiting Class AAA Rams. A transfer from Central Catholic, Ehrenberg scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards. Trailing by one after three quarters, Justin Miller's 29-yard run and Erenberg's 4-yard run pushed the Indians to the victory. Ringgold quarterback Josh Burnisky passed for 128 yards and tossed a 46-yard touchdown pass to Derek Fiore. The Rams also got a 65-yard interception return from Dylan Patch.
Ryan Allen scored three different ways in Class AAAA Plum's win at Class AAA Indiana. Allen scored on a 30-yard pass from Chris Dzinak, a 58-yard run, and a 21-yard return of a blocked punt. Allen finished with 114 yards on 13 carries and pulled in four passes for 65yards. The Mustangs scored three touchdowns in the second quarter, including a 4-yard run by Joe Bailey. Kwaku Asamoah scored on a 12-yard run for Indiana.
Noel Wilson ran for 103 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns to help the Class AAAA Foxesbeat the host Class AAA Golden Rams. The Foxes scored the first 32 points, including runs of 6 and 3 yards by Wilson, who added a 35-yard scoring pass to Randy Mallinger. Gary Negley scored on a 6-yard run for the Golden Rams and ran for a game-high 165 yards on 24 carries.
Dante Nania completed 13 of 19 passes for 282 yards and five touchdowns for the Class AAAA Spartans in their blowout of the visiting Class AAA Golden Lions. Nania tossed touchdowns passes of 6, 5, 22, 19, and 69 yards. Ryan Hayden was on the receiving end of three of those touchdown passes.
