WPIAL Class AA: Beaver Falls avoids upset

A huge upset was avoided when Beaver Falls mounted what might be the biggest comeback of the year in the WPIAL.
Trailing by 24 points early in the second half, the Tigers (5-1, 4-1) finished with four consecutive touchdowns to claim a 34-31 victory at New Brighton (1-5, 1-4) Friday in the Midwestern Conference.
The Lions led, 24-7, at halftime and increased the lead to 31-7 when they opened the third quarter with a 47-yard touchdown run by Kellen Mackey, who finished with 156 yards rushing.
Beaver Falls rallied with 27 unanswered points led by Rob Bell's two touchdowns. The winning touchdown occurred on a 99-yard play as Sage Curry caught a pass from Dan Stratton with 4:20 left in the fourth quarter.
The Jayhawks (5-1, 5-1) won a showdown in the Interstate Conference by edging the Vikings (5-1, 5-1) in double overtime. Jeannette led, 14-0, at halftime before Mount Pleasant rallied to force overtime. Jeannette got the winning points on its second overtime possession on a 10-yard touchdown catch by Jordan Edmunds from Seth Miller, followed by an extra-point kick by Miller. Mount Pleasant scored on its second overtime possession on a 10-yard Tylor Mellors run, but the conversion run failed.
No. 5 Burrell (5-1, 5-1) fell into a tie for first place with Freeport (5-1, 5-1) after an Allegheny Conference defeat to the Yellow Jackets. Brendan Lynch led the visiting Freeport with 139 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Top-rated Aliquippa (6-0, 4-0) blitzed visiting Freedom (2-4, 2-3) in the Midwestern Conference as Dravon Henry rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns.
No. 2 South Fayette (6-0, 6-0) blanked the visiting Quakers (2-4, 2-4) in the Century Conference. Brett Brumbaugh had another stellar game for the Lions, completing 19 of 25 passes for 354 yards and four touchdowns.
The third-ranked Little Prexies (6-0, 6-0) rolled at home against winless Brownsville (0-6, 0-5) in the Interstate Conference. Shai McKenzie rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns.
The No. 4 Bobcats (6-0, 6-0) spotted host Riverside (1-5, 1-4) a 21-14 first-quarter lead before roaring back with a 42-0 run. Darian Bradley led Beaver with three touchdown runs.
The host Centurions (4-2. 3-2) had little difficulty topping Southmoreland (1-5, 1-3) in the Century Conference. Chase Keller led Greensburg C.C. with two touchdowns and 104 yards passing.
South Park (3-3, 3-2) edged host Keystone Oaks (0-6, 0-5) in overtime in the Century Conference. The decisive points occurred when Jeff Szala caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Nic Scholle. Jared Becker led South Park with 191 yards rushing.
Charleroi (1-5, 1-5) held on for a victory at Waynesburg (1-5, 1-5) in the Interstate Conference. Jim Diaz caught an 11-yard pass from Brennan Matthews for the Cougars, who led at halftime, 10-0. Mitch Woytovich played a key role in the victory with a 27-yard field goal.
Gio Menichino broke a 21-21 deadlock with a 7-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run to give Mohawk (2-4, 2-3) a win in the Midwestern Conference at Ellwood City (1-5, 1-4).
The Gladiators (5-1, 4-1) dominated visiting McGuffey (2-4, 1-4) in the Century Conference. Brandon Murn paced South Allegheny with two touchdowns on runs of 25 and 5 yards.
The host Indians (4-2, 4-2) downed the Wildcats (1-5, 1-5) in an Allegheny Conference matchup, leading 23-7 at halftime.
The host Wildcats (3-3, 3-2) topped the Sabers (2-4, 1-4) in the Allegheny Conference.
