Terry Smith coached his final game at Gateway High School.

Smith, Gateway's coach the past 11 seasons, accepted a job as receivers coach at Temple University. His hiring will be announced later in the week.

Smith was highly successful at Gateway, going 101-30 with seven conference championships. His teams made the playoffs all 11 seasons and Smith guided the Gators to the WPIAL Class AAAA title game four times.

His departure ends a saga between Smith and the Gateway School Board over his jobs as coach and athletic director. In the summer, the board made Smith's athletic director job a part-time position and slashed his contract in half. The board also passed a resolution that, as of Dec. 31, a Gateway administrator also cannot have a supplemental contract. That meant Smith couldn't be athletic director and football coach.

The board eventually extended the deadline on the administrator/supplemental contract issue to June 30 of this year, but Smith decided to take a college job.
