You'll need two hands to count the number of Division I recruits on the field in tonight's Central Catholic-Upper St. Clair football game.

The two teams meet in a WPIAL Class AAAA semifinal at Chartiers Valley, and eight seniors from the two teams already have made verbal commitments to Division I-A programs.

Upper St. Clair quarterback-defensive back Dakota Conwell has committed to Pitt, where he will play linebacker. Upper St. Clair tight end-defensive end Jack Schwaba and lineman Ian Park will both play next season at Northwestern.

Central Catholic has two players headed to Maryland -- receiver-defensive back Anthony Nixon and quarterback Perry Hills. Nixon was recruited to play defensive back.

Three other Central Catholic players are headed to Mid-American Conference colleges. Running back Damion Jones-Moore and defensive back Juwan Haynes will play at Toledo, while offensive lineman Logan Dietz has made a verbal commitment to Bowling Green.

Recruiting notes

• Although he had some Division I scholarship offers, Gateway basketball player Barnett Harris did not sign with a college during the NCAA's week-long early-signing period that ended Wednesday. Harris, a 6-foot-10 senior, said he is now open to all colleges and will sign with a school during the spring signing period in April.

Gateway's Tyler Scott, a 6-5 senior, also is a Division I prospect, but didn't sign in the early period, either.

Shabazz Muhammad, a 6-6 forward from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, is ranked the No. 1 basketball player in the senior class, but Muhammad will not sign with a school until the spring period.

Muhammad's top choices are Arizona, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC, Duke, Kentucky and Kansas. He has visited Texas A&M and Kentucky and has future visits planned to Duke, Arizona and Kansas.

• The high school seniors who already had made verbal commitments to Penn State have been deluged with questions about their feelings toward the Nittany Lions since the news of the child sexual abuse case involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

One of those recruits is offensive lineman Anthony Stanko of Howland High School in Warren, Ohio. Stanko actually issued a statement earlier this week to answer questions about Penn State. In it, he said, "I stand behind my commitment to Penn State. I look forward to the top level of education I will receive at Penn State and am proud of the history and traditions they hold."
