North Xtra: Major changes in North suburbs conferences
Share with others:
Here is a compilation of North Xtra teams affected by the latest WPIAL football conference realignment:
• Class AAAA -- Fox Chapel was moved from the now-extinct Big East into what was formerly known as the Northern Seven, joining Butler Area, North Allegheny, North Hills, Pine-Richland, Seneca Valley and Shaler Area as well as Central Catholic.
• Class AAA -- Only four area schools are in this classification (Knoch, Hampton, Highlands, Mars Area), and they all remain together in what had been called the Greater Allegheny.
• Class AA -- Allegheny Conference members Deer Lakes and Shady Side Academy stay put, albeit in what is a modified -- and likely stronger -- conference. Quaker Valley, which this season will add players from Cornell as part of a cooperative agreement, remains in the Century.
• Class A -- Avonworth, North Catholic, Northgate and Springdale are North Xtra schools that stay in the Eastern Conference, which subbed out reigning champion Bishop Canevin and Our Lady of Sacred Heart for Apollo-Ridge and West Shamokin, two former Class AA programs.
