Steelers offensive line coach Sean Kugler was officially named as the new coach at the University of Texas at El Paso on Monday. Tonight, Kugler got his first recruit -- and it's a star quarterback from North Allegheny High School.

Mack Leftwich, a standout senior QB, made a verbal commitment to UTEP after Kugler called him and gave him a scholarship offer. Leftwich had made a verbal commitment earlier this fall to Stephen F. Austin, an NCAA Division I-AA school in Texas. But UTEP is up one level at Division I-A.

"I'm going to get a chance to play Division I football, which has been a dream of mine my whole life," Leftwich said. "Coach Kugler has a lot of confidence in me and one of the first things he did as a coach was offer me a scholarship. That really says something."

Leftwich and Kugler are no strangers to each other. Kugler's son, Pat, is a star lineman at North Allegheny and a teammate of Leftwich.
