High school highlights: No. 1 Sewickley Academy rolls

Section play kicked off for WPIAL boys soccer teams Tuesday, and one of the top programs in Class A put forth a strong opening showing.

J.P. Bowells scored a goal and chipped in two assists to lead Class A No. 1 Sewickley Academy to a 3-0 win at Riverside in Section 5.

Sewickley Academy (2-0, 1-0) was a WPIAL and PIAA semifinalist last season. Riverside (0-2, 0-1) advanced to the WPIAL quarterfinals.

Other top boys soccer games

• Aaron Ankney scored 1:45 into the first overtime to propel host Beth-Center (1-0, 1-0) to a 1-0 win against Washington (0-1, 0-1) in Class A Section 4.

• Austin Zurik scored two goals, the second coming with two minutes left in the second overtime, to vault host Quigley Catholic (2-0) past Winchester Thurston (0-1), 3-2, in a non-section game.

• Jake Thieret netted the game's lone goal with 1:30 left and visiting South Allegheny (2-0) held on to defeat Brentwood (1-2), 1-0, in a non-section game.

• Riverview (1-0, 1-0) got four goals from Zach Lesnick -- the team's starting goalkeeper last season -- and rolled to a 6-1 home win against West Shamokin (0-2, 0-1) in Class A Section 2.

• Will Noble's two goals helped defending Class A Section 2 champion Springdale (2-0, 1-0) defeat host St. Joseph (0-1, 0-1), 3-0.

• Collin Wurst had two goals to lead West Allegheny (3-0, 1-0) to a 4-1 victory at Obama Academy (0-3, 0-1) in Class AA Section 5.

Girls soccer

• Brie Cook scored a hat trick and added an assist for Penn Hills (1-1, 1-0) in a 6-0 win at Allderdice (0-2, 0-1) in Class AAA Section 3.

• Freshman Gabby Widman's two goals helped Brashear (1-0) gain its first win as a WPIAL team with a 4-0 triumph at Carrick (0-1) in a non-section game.

Boys golf

• Cody Ruffing's even-par 35 helped Peters Township hand Sewickley Academy its first loss, 183-187, in a non-section match at Allegheny Country Club. Both teams are 7-1.

• Kevin Rush shot a 1-over 37 at the Lindenwood Golf Club gold course to lead Canon-McMillan to a 194-202 win against South Fayette in Class AAA Section 7.

• Owen Miller fired a 1-under 35 at South Park Golf Course to push Burgettstown to a 193-207 victory against South Park in Class AA Section 4.

• At Meadowink Golf Course, Jorden Alfery's even-par 36 helped Fox Chapel edge Franklin Regional, 199-206, in Class AAA Section 4.

• Brody Taylor of Bethel Park shot a 3-under 32 at Mt. Lebanon Golf Club in helping the Black Hawks defeat Mt. Lebanon, 186-201, in Class AAA Section 6.

Field hockey

• Sabrina Burke scored the winning goal with two minutes left to give host Winchester Thurston a 2-1 win against Ellis School.
