The Kent State football team is having the best season, and three players from the WPIAL are making an impact on the Golden Flashes' defense.

Dana Brown, left, a senior defensive lineman from McKeesport High School, is seventh on the team in tackles with 40 and also has three sacks. Junior defensive lineman Richard Gray, a Woodland Hills graduate, has 8 1/2 tackles for loss and 4 1/2 sacks. He also has one interception.

Leon Green, a senior from Gateway, has moved into the starting lineup at defensive back and has two interceptions.

Also, freshman Julian Durden is a reserve running back, and the former Montour star has rushed for 99 yards on 26 carries.

Kent State is 11-1 and set a school record for wins. The Golden Flashes are ranked in the Top 25 and will play for the Mid-American Conference championship tonight against Northern Illinois at Ford Field in Detroit.

• The New Hampshire football team is in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs, and Thomas Jefferson graduate Jim Giansante has 14 receptions for 200 yards. New Hampshire (8-3) meets Wofford in the playoffs Saturday.

Destiny Brown's stay on the Baylor University women's basketball team didn't last long. Brown, a freshman from Gateway High School, was dismissed from the team in October for an unspecified violation of team rules. Brown was a Post-Gazette Fabulous 5 selection last season.
