Class AA roundup: Valley snaps long losing streak

The drop from Class AAA to AA appears to be the right move for Valley.
The Vikings won their first football game in three years Friday, topping Deer Lakes, 14-7, in the Allegheny Conference opener. Valley competed in the Class AAA Greater Allegheny Conference the previous two seasons.
Valley, snapping a 22-game losing streak that began in 2009, trailed 7-0 at halftime, but Ty Matthews scored the first Vikings touchdown on a one-yard run in the third quarter.
Chaz Cheatam scored the winning touchdown on an 11-yard pass reception from Matthews with 1:09 left in the contest.
Quaker Valley rallied with 20 points in the fourth quarter to defeat host South Park in the Century Conference. Burke Moser scored on a six-yard run with three seconds left. Jared Becker led South Park with 190 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
The Vikings opened Interstate Conference play with a rout at Waynesburg. Tyler Mellors rushed for 228 yards on 16 carries. Mellors scored touchdowns on runs of six, 50 and 41 yards.
Brett Brumbaugh completed 10 of 13 pass attempts for 238 yards and three touchdowns as the No. 2 ranked Lions blew out Century Conference rival McGuffey. South Fayette rolled up 411 yards in total offense.
The Buccaneers easily won a non-conference contest at Brownsville as Burrell amassed a 24-8 edge in first downs. Cole Bush led Burrell with 230 yards rushing and five touchdowns.
The fourth-ranked Rebels blanked host South Allegheny in the Century Conference. Quarterback Luke Brumbaugh rushed for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to Lou Rotunda who scored the first touchdown on a 32-yard interception return.
Dan Stratton passed for three touchdowns and 196 yards for the host Tigers in this Midwestern Conference game. Beaver Falls held the Panthers to minus 34 yards rushing.
The Jayhawks, last season's WPIAL runner-up, were led by Shavonta Draft's 191 yards rushing and two touchdowns against visiting Southmoreland in this Interstate Conference game.
Jarred Brevard rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns for the host Indians, who scored in every quarter against Ford City in this Allegheny Conference game.
The No. 5 Little Prexies were led by Shai McKenzie's 211 yards rushing and three touchdowns in an Interstate Conference game.
Damon Smith rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns for Freeport in an Allegheny Conference game at Kittanning. Freeport led, 26-0, after three quarters.
A pair of Shane McFarland touchdowns in the third quarter provided visiting Mohawk with a victory in this Midwestern Conference game.
D'Andre Pickens accounted for three touchdowns and 205 yards rushing to lead the winning Ironmen in this Century Conference game.
In the battle of Cougars, Yough began Interstate Conference play with a comfortable win at Charleroi.
The Lions edged the visiting Wolverines in this Midwestern Conference game.
