Clairton escaped Chartiers-Houston with its WPIAL-record winning streak intact -- barely.
The Bears recovered a late onside kick and converted a first down to run out the clock and hold off the Buccaneers, 22-20, in an opening-night thriller in the Black Hills Conference for their 48th consecutive victory.
Clairton has not lost a game since a stunning season-opening defeat to Laurel in 2009. Friday night nearly provided another opening-night shocker.
Chartiers-Houston had never scored a touchdown against Clairton since the Bears joined the Black Hills in 2008, but on Friday night Kaleb Susko connected on touchdown passes of 43 and 74 yards as Chartiers-Houston pulled to within two points of Clairton with just over two minutes remaining. Bryon Cliffard and Armani Ford each tossed touchdown passes for Clairton, which rotated quarterbacks throughout the game.
Monessen's Chavas Rawlins rushed for three scores and passed for two more in a Black Hills Conference win against visiting California.
Dante Marsick scored on runs of 34 and 74 yards to lead No. 2 Rochester to a non-conference win at Avonworth.
A year after going winless, host Avella opened with a blowout win against first-year program Vincentian in a non-conference game.
