Blue Chip Chat with ... Bethel Park's Bre Ford
Bre Ford saw a lot of action as a backup running back his sophomore season and, as a junior, he rushed for more than 1,300 yards. He sees the field well and works hard, but he said he can improve his speed and his blocking abilities. He also plays strong safety, although he believes he will be a running back in college.
Ford has a scholarship offer from Buffalo and has interest from several schools, including Pitt, West Virginia, Rutgers, Ohio and Bowling Green. Ford said some schools are "close" to offering him a scholarship but are waiting to see how he will perform early this season.
Q: How much pressure do you feel to perform this season, knowing so many schools are watching you?
A: I really try to just push that to the back of my mind. I'm trying to focus on the season and our goals as a team. My goals come after the season's over. I think by achieving the team goals, anything that comes to me will just fall in place.
Q: What position do you want to play in college?
A: Honestly, it doesn't matter. Wherever they need me. Offense, defense or special teams. I just want to play.
Q: What type of running back are you? Do you run through people or do you run around people?
A: I'm balanced. I can do both. I feel like I'm just as good at running through people as I am at getting around them. So it's pick my poison, I guess.
Q: Who's the better back, you or (West Virginia recruit) Nick Kwiatkoski?
A: It's tough because we're a 1-2 punch. He has a different type of running style and he's really good at what he does. I have a different type and I'm really good at what I do, so we just complement each other.
Q: What is the best thing about being a senior?
A: You get to eat first, you get to use whatever you want first. You don't have to wait in line anymore. Finally, it's my year to show everyone what to do. I guess I can boss a couple kids around now. The last couple years, I was being bossed around and I didn't really like it. I get it now that I'm a senior. You just can't wait. It's kind of like a pecking order.
Q: How old is your book bag?
A: got one last year, but I get a new one every year.
Q: How well will the Steelers do this season?
All my friends are bashing them, saying they're not going to be that good. But I'm confident that the Steelers are going to be pretty good. They've got a good secondary. They got [Troy] Polamalu back. I think Ryan Clark is a really good, underrated safety. They got Aaron Smith back, too. I think the Steelers are going to have a good year, even with Ben being out. The run game is pretty good. I think we'll be all right.
