Blue Chip Chat: Cameron Saddler

The skinny: Returned five kickoffs for touchdowns last season, one short of the national record. Returned one punt for a touchdown. Averaged 36.1 yards on 28 kickoff returns. Also rushed for 1,045 yards on 196 carries and scored 20 touchdowns (average length 42.1 yards). But statistics are only half the story about Saddler. He is a good-natured, jovial teenager with a great sense of humor. Sit down with him for a few minutes and it's like a comedy show.
College talk: Even though he's small, Saddler is being recruited by big schools and has narrowed his list to West Virginia, Michigan, Virginia and Syracuse. Schools are recruiting him as a slotback and kick returner.
How tall are you? C'mon now. You know every time a reporter calls me, I lie and change it. But I have to start keeping up with my lies. A reporter called me the other day and said, 'How big are you?' I said 5-8. He told me the last time he talked to me, I told him I was 5-9. So I said, 'I guess I'm 5-9.'
You talk a lot on the field, don't you? It's just having fun. If I'm talking, I have to back it up, which means I have to give 100 percent every play. ... I always try to get in someone's head. I have to, being this little.
Is anything off limits with the trash talking? Nothing. And don't ever let me see your girlfriend, because then it's over. If I ever see a player's girlfriend, you're going to hate my guts. In fact, I might call someone's girlfriend this year. I'll say, 'You know what? If we beat your boy's team this week, you have to go on a date with me.'
How many girlfriends do you have? Right now, it's the season, and when the season comes, you have to start settling down. You have to have only one girl who you can complain to every day after practice. So I have only one right now who I complain to every day after practice. She's listening, too. I don't know why. But she's listening.
David Beckham is ...
Smooth. You see his girlfriend? He makes nice spikes, too.
You wear David Beckham soccer spikes? I got them personalized. Look, my [jersey] number 5 is on them. They're so light. And nobody knows they're soccer spikes. They say, 'Oooh, where'd you get them from?' I just say, 'Don't worry about it.'
Tell me what you think about college recruiting: You get a whole bunch of junk fed to you. Everywhere you go, coaches say, 'You come here, you're going to be the man.' The coaches are like used car salesmen. That's what they are. Everyone is trying to sell their product.
People might be surprised to know that ... I was in a play called "Showboat" when I was 7 years old at the Benedum Center.
Were you a dancer? C'mon now. What are you trying to do, hurt me? I was an actor on the stage. I sang, too, but I didn't have a microphone. I was just in the back humming.
Any question you wish I would've asked? I wish you would've asked about my offensive linemen. All the reporters come here, and nobody asks about them. Can you mention them -- Aaron Sukay, Colin Rocky, Eric Warning, Corey Burnside, Bill Kemp and Steve Horvath.Bill Wade, Post-Gazette
