Aliquippa toppled by Wyomissing in PIAA Championship game

HERSHEY, Pa. -- The mighty Aliquippa High School football team will come home without a state championship.

Aliquippa was knocked off by Wyomissing, 17-14, in the PIAA Class AA championship game this afternoon at Hersheypark Stadium. Mason Smith's 36-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter gave Wyomissing the win. Aliquippa came into the game with a 15-0 record.

Wyomissing had three first-half turnovers and Aliquippa took a 14-7 lead at the break. The Quips scored on their first possession after a Wyomissing fumble. Dravon Henry scored the touchdown on a 1-yard run, and Terry Swanson ran for the two-point conversion.

Wyomissing scored with 9:16 left in the half when Mason Smith ran 13 yards for a touchdown.

But Aliquippa got one more score before halftime on Henry's 10-yard run.

Early in the third quarter, Jonah Bowman kicked a PIAA championship-game record 52-yard field goal to make it 14-10. Wyomissing took the lead with 11:18 left in the game when Smith broke through the right side for a 36-yard touchdown.
