The WPIAL has given a slap on the wrist to the Leechburg High School boys basketball team and school administrators.

The league put the basketball program on probation for a year and publicly censured the coaches and school officials for having a team in its tipoff tournament that is not a school-sanctioned team.

Leechburg played host to its own tipoff tournament Dec. 7-8, and one of the teams in the four-team event was St. Gertrude of Vandergrift. But St. Gertrude is not a high school, and its team plays in a CYO league.

PIAA and WPIAL schools are not permitted to play non-sanctioned teams.

Leechburg and Winchester Thurston played St. Gertrude on consecutive nights. Winchester was only reprimanded by the WPIAL for playing St. Gertrude.

Probation simply means Leechburg must make sure it follows all WPIAL rules and regulations for the next year, or it will face harsher penalties.
