Two former Post-Gazette player of the year selections squared off recently in a matchup between two Top 25 women's college basketball teams.

UCLA's Markel Walker, a Schenley High School graduate, had 21 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists, but it wasn't enough as the Bruins lost to Notre Dame, 76-64. Notre Dame had former Mt. Lebanon star Madison Cable, who scored seven points.

Walker is a senior guard-forward who is having a big season at UCLA. She was the Pacific-12 Conference player of the week two weeks ago. Heading into this week, Walker was averaging 18.8 points and 7.3 rebounds a game.

Cable, a sophomore who sat out last season with a foot injury, had played in three games and was averaging three points and four rebounds.

• A Duquesne University player is leading the country in steals. Jocelyn Floyd, a senior guard from Washington High School, came into this week averaging 6.2 steals a game, the best in women's NCAA Division I. She had nine steals in one game and eight in another. Floyd was averaging 7.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

• The Northwestern University football team finished the season with nine wins for the first time since 2008, and a former WPIAL player had an impact on the Wildcats defense. Quentin Williams, a defensive end from Central Catholic, was second on the team in sacks with 3 1/2. He also had 35 tackles and recovered one fumble for the Wildcats, who finished the regular season with a 9-3 record.
