Freshman guard Micah Mason has moved into the starting lineup at Drake University and had a big game in his second start last Saturday.

Mason, a former star at Highlands High School who led the WPIAL in scoring the past two seasons, scored 19 points and made five of six 3-point attempts in a 74-56 victory against Eastern Illinois. He also had six assists.

Mason's first start was Dec. 19 against North Carolina Central. For the season, Mason is averaging 5.8 points and 1.1 rebounds a game. At Highlands, he set a WPIAL record for career 3-pointers and this season he is shooting 61 percent (14 of 23) from 3-point range and 54 percent (19 of 35) overall.

Drake is a Division I team that plays in the Missouri Valley Conference.

• Sheldon Jeter, the Post-Gazette's Player of the Year for the 2011-12 basketball season, is playing 13 minutes a game as a freshman at Vanderbilt. Jeter, a 6-foot-7 freshman forward, is averaging 2.8 points and 2.5 rebounds a game. He has six 3-pointers for the Commodores (5-5).

• Nico Megaludis was one of the best wrestlers in WPIAL history and is now one of the top colleges wrestlers in the country. Megaludis, a Franklin Regional graduate who is now at Penn State, is ranked by Intermat as the No. 2 wrestler in NCAA Division II at 125 pounds. He has an 8-1 record with four pins, a technical fall and two major decisions. Penn State's team is ranked No. 1 in the country.
