For Vincentian Academy basketball, there was a double take on championships this weekend.

The Vincentian girls won the WPIAL Class A championship today at Palumbo Center with a 53-46 victory against Serra Catholic. The win came less than 24 hours after Vincentian won the WPIAL Class A boys championship.

For the girls, it was the second consecutive title and third in four years.

Youth was definitely served this time as a sophomore and two freshmen led the Royals in scoring. Sophomore Brenna Wise, a 6-foot-1 forward, was a dominating force, scoring 18 points and grabbing 20 rebounds. Freshman guard Kiersten Elliott came off the bench to score 12 points and freshman guard-forward Maia Joiner added 12.

The Sieg sisters led Serra in scoring. Sophomore Katie scored 13 points and junior Megan 12.

Vincentian (25-1) led at halftime, 24-21, and the game was tied, 28-28, with three minutes left in the third quarter. But Vincentian scored the final eight points of the quarter, five by Wise, to grab a 36-28 advantage. Vincentian opened up a 43-30 lead with a little more than four minutes left and Serra couldn't recover.
