The Dribbler: He shows plenty of resolve

Though a staunch proponent of the transition game, The Dribbler long ago resolved not to make New Year's Resolutions. Until now.

"I never had the dedication to carry through on change," the Post-Gazette's basketball prognosticator said. "I'm a static individual, like my old Magnavox with the rabbit ears. And besides, I love my life of leisure. You do have to change a little with the times, though."

So he decided to establish some goals. For 2012, The Dribbler resolves to:

• Marry Kim Kardashian. (Why not?)

• Get a Blackberry because that's his favorite fruit.

• Dress as immaculately as Mt. Lebanon coach Joey David just once.

• Avoid reassessment.

• From three rows back, surreptitiously photograph smoke emanating from Tim McConnell's ears .

Smoke is certainly emanating from The Dribbler's ears, as he is fired up about the rapidly unfolding season. His forecast for games scheduled through Thursday:

Top boys matchups

Obama Academy at Allderdice, today, 4 p.m. -- The new kids and the old guard are two of the City League's better aggregations. The Dribbler is a traditionalist, but he's picking the Dragons because he believes they're better. Winner: Allderdice.

Plum at Woodland Hills, today, 7:30 p.m. -- The Mustangs' Nolan Cressler can really play the game. But so can the Wolverines, and they are at home in this intriguing Section 2-AAAA contest. Winner: Woodland Hills.

New Castle at Central Valley, today, 7:30 p.m. -- The high-flying, high-scoring Red Hurricane is No. 1 in WPIAL Class AAA. It will be tested by Central Valley, on the road, but will ultimately prevail in this Section 2 showdown. Winner: New Castle.

Lincoln Park at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. -- These powerhouses not only are vying for Section 1 superiority, but for staking a claim as a favorite in WPIAL Class A. It should be a raucous time in Coraopolis, especially for the home fans. Winner: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

Other top boys games

(Home team in all CAPS) Today, 7:30 p.m.: HEMPFIELD over Kiski Area; Hampton over BURRELL; JEANNETTE over Brownsville; Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.: Chartiers Valley over BETHEL PARK.

Top girls matchups

Franklin Regional at Gateway, today, 6 p.m. -- The Panthers will be clawing, but Destiny Brown and the Gators will take an early upper hand in Section 2-AAAA. Winner: Gateway.

Mt. Lebanon at Bethel Park, Monday, 7:30 p.m. -- This is the first of back-to-back tests for the defending PIAA champions. The Blue Devils will pass it. Winner: Mt. Lebanon.

Hopewell at Blackhawk, Monday, 8 p.m. -- They're rivals, Section 2 powers and likely two of the best squads in WPIAL Class AAA. This one goes to the host team. Winner: Blackhawk.

Other top girls games

(Home team in all CAPS) Monday, 7:30 p.m.: HEMPFIELD over Penn-Trafford; ELIZABETH FORWARD over South Park; Chartiers Valley over SOUTH FAYETTE; Thursday, 7:30 p.m.: BISHOP CANEVIN over Steel Valley; MT. LEBANON over Peters Township.
