PIAA backs WPIAL's ruling on transfer case

The PIAA upheld the WPIAL in a student-athlete transfer case and now Elijah Minnie is ineligible to play high school basketball this season at Lincoln Park.
The PIAA ruled Minnie ineligible, saying the talented 6-foot-8 junior transferred from Summit Academy to Lincoln Park for athletic reasons. The WPIAL originally ruled Minnie ineligible last month, but he appealed the ruling to the PIAA. After a hearing Thursday in Mechanicsburg, the PIAA upheld the WPIAL's decision by a 3-2 vote.
Minnie attended Monessen as a freshman, but as a sophomore was sent to Summit Academy, a school for adjudicated youth near Butler. After Minnie completed his sophomore year at Summit Academy, he enrolled at Lincoln Park, a Class A school with a strong basketball program.
"The [WPIAL] panel was unanimous in its belief that the transfer was motivated by a material purpose related specifically to the sport of basketball," said Dan Cardone, a WPIAL representative on the PIAA Board of Control. "By the PIAA upholding our decision, it reaffirms what we felt occurred."
