No. 1 South Park tops West Mifflin

West Mifflin's Ciara Patterson did everything she could, but it wasn't enough to defeat the No. 1-ranked girls basketball team in WPIAL Class AAA.

Patterson had 24 of her game-high 38 points in the second half, but by then the Titans were just playing catch-up. South Park beat West Mifflin (7-9, 6-3), 76-50, Monday night to clinch the Section 4 title for the second consecutive season.

Halie Torris and Ashley Mikelonis each had 17 points for the Eagles (18-1, 9-0), who have won 17 consecutive games.

Other top girls games

• Erin Waskowiak had 15 of her 28 points in the third quarter, when Class AA No. 2 Bishop Canevin (16-3, 10-1) pulled away from Steel Valley, 65-49, for a Section 5 victory. C.C. Dixon had 17 points for the host Ironmen (15-5, 7-5).

• Claire Oberdorf's free throw with two seconds left was the difference in Greensburg Salem's 57-56 Class AAA Section 3 triumph at Indiana. Angela Balya had 16 points and Oberdorf 15 for the Golden Lions (10-10, 6-5). Olivia Sipos had 12 of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter for the Little Indians (12-8, 6-5).

Class of its section

• Class A No. 4 Monessen clinched a section title for the fifth consecutive season with a 68-39 victory at Serra (12-6, 9-2). Geena Shrader had 25 points for the Greyhounds (17-3, 11-0), who have won 59 of their past 60 section games.

Stars of the night

• Marcena Shepherd had 11 of her game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter as Cornell (10-11, 6-5) beat host Aliquippa (7-11, 6-6), 52-31, Class A Section 1.

• Monica Burns had 13 of her team-high 24 points in the third quarter, leading Class AAAA No. 4 Hempfield (17-3, 9-2) to a 52-42 victory against visiting Norwin (11-9, 7-4) in Section 1.

Milestone

• Wilkinsburg's Erica Johnson surpassed the 1,000-point plateau with 25 points, and added 15 rebounds, in a 71-54 Class AA Section 3 win against visiting Springdale (7-13, 5-6). Johnson, a senior guard/forward, has 1,009 career points for the Tigers (8-12, 5-6), who stayed in playoff contention with the victory. She reached the milestone late in the first half when she had 19 points.
