New Castle rallies, 74-58

Micah Mason helped Highlands pull off another stunner.

Well, at least for a half.

Highlands surprisingly led No. 1 seed New Castle at halftime, but the heavily-favored Red Hurricanes rebounded to defeat the Golden Rams, 74-58, Tuesday night in a WPIAL Class AAA first-round playoff game at North Allegheny.

In his final game, Mason made six 3-pointers and scored 30 points.

Mason had 20 points in the first half when the Golden Rams (9-15) took a 36-35 lead.

New Castle (23-0) then outscored Highlands, 21-7, in the third quarter to break it open.

Corey Eggleston scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half for New Castle. Anthony Richards added five 3-pointers and 17 points.

Other Class AAA games

• Montour 59, Indiana 33: The defending champion Spartans (18-3) limited the Little Indians (15-9) to a season-low point total in gaining a win at Gateway. Ryan Lewis led the Spartans with 18 points and Kevin Sciulli added 15, all on 3-pointers. The Spartans made 11 3s.

• Trinity 72, Keystone Oaks 62: Jarod Deep's 22 points led the Hillers (14-10) to the upset win against the No. 4 seed Golden Eagles (20-3) at Moon. Rocco Contristano scored 23 points for the Golden Eagles, who were outscored, 53-44, in the second half.

• Blackhawk 52, Uniontown 43: Cory Ostach scored 22 points and the Cougars (14-9) used a strong finish to defeat the Red Raiders (15-7) at Chartiers Valley. The Cougars led, 42-39, with 1:23 left before pulling away. They made 12 of 14 free throws in the final quarter.

• Hampton 68, Elizabeth Forward 59: Mark Pilarski scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half to lead the Talbots (20-3) to their 14th win in a row by defeating the Warriors (13-11) at North Hills. Nate Pelco made five 3-pointers and scored 20 points for the Warriors.

• Beaver 68, South Fayette 65: The Bobcats (17-6) outscored the Lions (16-7), 29-14, in the fourth quarter to earn a win at West Allegheny. Christian Herstine scored 25 points for the Bobcats, who trailed, 51-39, after three quarters. Zach Challingsworth scored 23 points to pace the Lions, a finalist a year ago.

• Central Valley 49, Greensburg Salem 43: Curtis Lewis scored 15 of his 24 points in the first half in helping the Warriors (15-9) advance with a victory against the Golden Lions (16-7) at Fox Chapel. Julian Thompson led the Golden Lions with 23 points.

City League semifinals

• Allderdice 76, Westinghouse 34: Ben Mickens had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the two-time defending champion Dragons (17-6) in a romp over the Bulldogs (7-17) at Brashear. Allderdice played without leading scorer Justin Dobbs, who served a one-game suspension after receiving two technicals in the previous game.

• Obama Academy 82, Brashear 63: D.J. Porter scored 19 points and DaAndre Byrd added 18 to help the Eagles (16-5) win their 11th game in a row by defeating the Bulls (6-16) at Allderdice. Marlin Jackson scored 24 points for the Bulls.
