In August, De Porucznik retired after 48 successful seasons as the girls' basketball coach at Mount Alvernia, a private high school in Millvale.

Tuesday, the school retired the whole basketball program.

Mount Alvernia announced it is discontinuing the girls' team -- at least for this season -- because of a lack of participation. The school doesn't have enough players to field a team.

Two years ago, Mount Alvernia played in the WPIAL Class A championship. Porucznik won six WPIAL championships, one PIAA title and two titles in the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese, which predated the WPIAL.

Mount Alvernia would have been the third-smallest school in WPIAL basketball this season, in terms of enrollment.
