Looking to gain a key section victory Tuesday, the Shaler boys basketball team got a career night from its best player.

Geno Thorpe scored a career-high 34 points to lead WPIAL Class AAAA No. 4 Shaler to a 72-63 win at No. 2 Central Catholic.

Thorpe, a junior guard, helped the Titans (7-2, 2-1) jump to a seven-point lead after one quarter, an advantage that extended to 13 through three quarters.

Zack Taylor added 16 points for the Titans.

Lincoln Davis led Central Catholic (5-5, 2-1) with 25 points and Claude Scott had 9.

More boys basketball

• Matt Roman's 18 points helped host Fox Chapel (6-3, 1-2) upset Woodland Hills (6-2, 2-1), 68-45, in Class AAAA Section 2. Fox Chapel limited the Wolverines to 25 percent shooting and outscored them, 13-2, in the second quarter.

• Troy Apke scored all 15 of his points in the second half to lift Mt. Lebanon (5-4, 2-1) to a 46-37 win at Bethel Park (6-3, 2-1) in Class AAAA Section 4. Cody Gilchrist led Bethel Park with 10 points.

• Kason Harrell scored 21 points and Lane Waltenbaugh chipped in 16 to help visiting Hempfield (7-1, 3-0) hand Connellsville (7-1, 2-1) its first loss, 60-47, in Class AAAA Section 1.

• Chris Koryak scored 36 points -- including 24 in the first half -- and added 10 rebounds for Class A No. 4 Vincentian (7-1, 2-1) in a 78-65 triumph against visiting Sewickley Academy (3-6, 1-1) in Section 2. Carrington Motley led Sewickley Academy with 29 points.

• Class AA No. 1 Monessen was limited to just three first-quarter points, but rebounded to defeat visiting Wilkinsburg (5-3, 1-2), 51-38, in Section 3. Alonzo Payne paced the Greyhounds (9-0, 3-0) with 15 points.
